To me, the show was irreversibly harmed when The Ropers left. I just never warmed to Mr. Furley. That, and the fact that The Ropers were the most hilarious duo to ever hit television screens. Such chemistry and timing. Audra Lindley's lines were the most predictable stuff, and yet she was able to nail them and make them hilarious every single time.
I am actually a fan of The Ropers, their abysmal spin-off that ABC spent about $12.87 on to produce. Everyone likes to go on and on about how it had comic great Jeffrey Tambor. I always have to point out that it also had cinema legend Patty McCormack, aka Rhoda in The Bad Seed. I always thought it would have rocked the house if Nancy Kelly had shown up as the grandmother of the little redheaded runt, Evan Cohen, who was supposed to be the Dennis the Menace to Stanley Roper's Mr. Wilson. And for extra fun, they could have had Eileen Heckart show up as a very drunk Mrs. Hortense Daigle and hit on Jack Tripper, who just happened to drop by for a dip in the community hot tub!
