Liberating The Gay People

With the legalization of gay marriage in New York and Pride celebrations continuing this month all over the place - I thought it was time to share this odd little pamphlet that an old friend gave to me a few years ago.
What might a first seem to be pro-gay propaganda, this many-fonted curiosity is actually a anti-gay diatribe from the Word of Life Fellowship in Schroon Lake, NY. Published in 1973, this bible quote filled booklet states "Not only do you find the Gays being worked into the scripts of popular radio and television shows, they even have their own programs!" In 1973? What was this guy Jack Wyrtzen watching? THE ODD COUPLE? SESAME STREET? THE MERV GRIFFIN SHOW? Oh, thats right THE PAUL LYNDE SHOW aired on ABC back then.

He says that its not his intent to condemn homosexuality, though then he goes on for 13 pages about God creating Adam and Eve, not "another man" and that "in God's eye's this was sin" and "when man ignores God and flaunts what God calls evil, God sometimes takes violent action". He then states that tolerance should not be allowed. So Christ-like. Wyrtzen died in, 1996, after leading the giant freak Tiny Tim to Born Again Christianity. Jack left behind eight children and 55 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I hope at least 10% of the Wyrtzens are big flaming homos like Paul Lynde. Thanks for liberating us, Jack.

Anonymous has left a new comment

I just love getting reader feedback on my blog posts. I really love when the feedback is for something I posted over a year ago - which tells me that people actually look at older posts! Who knew?

We'll, today I got an interesting little message from somebody named "Anonymous" that I'd like to share with my readers. This comment is in response to a post I made on September 29, 2009 on the controversial topic of celebrity record albums called "When TV Stars Sing".

Here is the lovely message from Anonymous:

"You ruin your blog with hateful comments, but what else is new? Yet another leftie spewing stereotypical rhetoric, ie, all Republicans are nut jobs. The second such comment I've read from you, so I'll just leave your blog.

For the record, I am an independent, so I think you are all "nut jobs" in a moronic civil war. But you have to interject your immaturity into a blog that should be free of politics and religion. Wouldn't it bother you if a cool blog about classic stuff randomly called homosexuals (or blacks) hateful names? Or do you think that's fine, that everybody should be disrespectful?

You partisan political boneheads have ruined civility on this planet. I'll bet you probably think you are a peaceful, good person. But you have the same hate in your heart as terrorists. Aren't you proud?"
Normally when I get messages like this (about one a year), I ignore it. But today, after learning about the death of the legendary goddess Tura Satana - I feel I have to respond somehow. Kinda like the angry drag queens who started the Stonewall Riots on the night Judy Garland died, but with a lot less makeup, feathers and glitter.

Okay, let's dissect Anonymous' claims:

"You ruin your blog with hateful comments, but what else is new? "
Well, there's lots new. New York.  New Kids on the Block. New Zoo Revue. I for one, do not think my blog is "ruined" - it's my damn blog and it's my damn opinions. My so-called hateful comments are in response to other people's bigotry and intolerance. In the case of Buddy Ebsen - he was a not a nice person. His negative campaign against co-star Nancy Kulp has been well documented, and it cost her an election.

"Yet another leftie spewing stereotypical rhetoric, ie, all Republicans are nut jobs."
I don't recall ever saying all Republicans are nutjobs. Not ALL Republicans are nutjobs - but a lot are. So are some Democrats. And liberals. And independents. And people without a sense of humor.

"The second such comment I've read from you, so I'll just leave your blog."
Well, thanks for visiting.
"For the record, I am an independent, so I think you are all "nut jobs" in a moronic civil war."
Glad you cleared that up.
"But you have to interject your immaturity into a blog that should be free of politics and religion. "
Religion & politics are a part of pop culture, always have been, honey. My immaturity is part of my charm. :)

"Wouldn't it bother you if a cool blog about classic stuff randomly called homosexuals (or blacks) hateful names?"
I'm sure a blog like that exists. It wouldn't bother me because I wouldn't visit it, just like I don't get my news from FOX. The difference here is political affiliation is a conscious CHOICE that someone makes based on their views. Sexual orientation and race are not. Besides "nutjob" isn't hateful - it's fucking funny!

"Or do you think that's fine, that everybody should be disrespectful?"
There is difference between "free speech" and "hate speech". If I said that people should go out and kill Buddy Ebsen's family and deface his grave with feces - that would be disrespectful.

"You partisan political boneheads have ruined civility on this planet."
Civility is still alive. Is calling someone a "bonehead" civil?

"I'll bet you probably think you are a peaceful, good person."
I know I am, bitch.

"But you have the same hate in your heart as terrorists."
Yes, because calling Buddy Ebsen a nutjob is the same as crashing a plane into the Twin Towers.
"Aren't you proud?"
Oh I'm very proud. Proud that I have 8000 visitors per week who enjoy my blog for what it is - a reflection of the things I like and want to share with like-minded people, not Anonymous visitors who get all bent out of shape because I call Buddy Ebsen a nutjob.

LORD LOVE A DUCK trailer

I watched this classic film for the first time last night. Don't have the energy to write a review or synosis, but here's the trailer for you all to enjoy. While in the blogosphere, please visit our friends at A Touch of Tuesday Weld.

St. Franics of Assisi

Okay, what? Doug, the ex-Catholic blogging about a saint TWICE in one weekend? Well, yesterday when I posted my review of Sam Fuller's WHITE DOG, in which the unnamed dog attacks and kills a man inside of a church before a stained glassed window of St. Francis of Assisi –I had absolutely no idea that today (October 4th) was the animal-loving saint's "holy day"!
St. F of A was the founder of the Franciscan friars and is known as the patron saint of animals and the environment - so basically he's the coolest saint in my book. He's kind of like if Ed Begley, the Dog Whisperer and Dr. Doolittle merged and became a monk. So if you're gonna believe in any of that stuff they teach you in Catholic School or not - just go and be kind to an animal today (and every day) in honor of Giovanni Francesco di Bernardone.

By popular demand - The Defenders!

I posted this about 2 weeks ago, since then it's become even more timely. Please share it, post it, repost it, spread it around far and wide. As one of the producers, I'm glad that this is catching on, but I am also sad that it had to be made in the first place. The message is clear and is needed to be heard now more than ever. Thanks!

The Defenders

Here's a little project that I helped produce in response to California's Prop 8 passage which may have made my legal marriage invalid. (It's now up to the court to decide if the ban effects marriages performed before the vote). Could you believe that in 21st Century America people could vote to actually TAKE AWAY the rights of other people? It boggles the mind.

Fucked Up Religious Pamphlets - 3rd in a series

While not as fucked up as previous pamphlets, something about this one just makes me wanna pee. Have you ever seen so much yellow in one place in your life? Yellow background, yellow sweater, yellow jumpsuit, blonde hair, etc. I guess the way to "Have a Happy Home" is by surrounding yourself in all things yellow. What's interesting is that the family shown here is actually outdoors...in a house-shaped box -therefore they are homeless and relying on the contents of this pamphlet to instruct them on "How" to obtain a home of some sorts. Maybe this is really a real estate brochure? I don't know - all I know is I really gotta pee.

Fucked Up Religious Pamphlets - 1st in a series

Okay, what exactly is going on here? Clearly "The Way to Heaven" is what you experience when you stand up barefoot on a rickety old swing set and loosely hold on to the rusted chains while your dad pushes you really, really, hard. Luckily there isn't a cement slab underneath the swing set...or is there? This is just plain creepy.

This Blog Turns 1 Today!

Wow - time really does fly when you are having fun! One year ago today I launched this blog. Originally called MOVIES THAT MAKE YOU SAY "HUH?" - the focus was mainly on bad movies that I love. That first day alone, I posted 5 reviews that first appeared on my other blog, VELVET CANDY ENTERTAINMENT (which was created mainly to promote projects that I produce or work on, like SOCKET, SCREENING PARTY and REUNION).The five first "Huh?" reviews were 1) POOR PRETTY EDDIE - famous for poor pretty Leslie Uggams getting raped while scenes of dogs copulating are intercut. Just plain nasty! 2) THE TEACHER - in which DENNIS THE MENACE star Jay North goes nude. Yikes, Mr. Wilson! 3) THE FAT SPY in which Phyliss Diller shares the screen with Jayne Mansfield! Zoinks! 4) SOMETIMES AUNT MARTHA DOES DREADFUL THINGS which must be seen to be believed and 5) THE GARDENER featuring sexy Joe Dallesandro naked, as usual. Also on that first day, I counted down my TOP TEN MOVIES THAT MAKE YOU SAY "HUH?". That was fun to do.In December 2007, I introduced the concept of the "HUH?" HALL OF FAME - and soon inducted the legendary Liz Taylor and fantastic Faye Dunaway into the membership. In August 2008, I decided to expand my scope and include all of pop culture into my blog - and so DOUGSPLOITATION was born – starting with a look at the Peignot font and how the opening titles of the MARY TYLER MOORE Show and THE ABC MOVIE OF THE WEEK shaped me into the blogger I am today. (See my DOUGSPLOITATION logo for reference)On Sunday, August 25 everything changed when I decided to post a video of a band named "Sonseed" performing "Jesus is a Friend of Mine". As I've said before I've owned this videotape for 25 years and NEVER thought it would catch on the way it did. The rest is history. The best part about the whole experience (other than gaining 4000 readers each day) is that I've been instrumental in reuniting the lead singer Sal with many of his former bandmates and friends. Which, I think, is the coolest thing about this here internet -it brings people who belong together - together! Looking forward to sharing my silliness with you folks for many years to come! - peace, Doug

Lynda Carter on the topic of Sarah Palin...

In a recent interview in Philadelphia Magazine, writer Victor Fiorillo asked TV's sensational WONDER WOMAN (and fabulous cabaret performer) Lynda Carter what she thought about the Republicans and certain media outlets comparing wretched VP nominee Sarah Palin to Wonder Woman.

This is Lynda's incredible response:

"Don’t get me started. She’s the anti-Wonder Woman. She’s judgmental and dictatorial, telling people how they’ve got to live their lives. And a superior religious self-righteousness ... that’s just not what Wonder Woman is about. Hillary Clinton is a lot more like Wonder Woman than Mrs. Palin. She did it all, didn’t she?

No one has the right to dictate, particularly in this country, to force your own personal views upon the populace — religious views. I think that is suppressive, oppressive, and anti-American. We are the loyal opposition. That’s the whole point of this country: freedom of speech, personal rights, personal freedom. Nor would Wonder Woman be the person to tell people how to live their lives. Worry about your own life! Worry about your own family! Don't be telling me what I want to do with mine.
I like John McCain. But this woman — it's anathema to me what she stands for. I think America should be very afraid. Very afraid. Separation of church and state is the one thing the creators of the Constitution did agree on — that it wasn’t to be a religious government. People should feel free to speak their minds about religion but not dictate it or put it into law.

What I don’t understand, honestly, is how anyone can even begin to say they know the mind of God. Who do they think they are? I think that’s ridiculous. I know what God is in my life. Now I am sure that she’s not all just that. But it’s enough to me. It’s enough for me to have a visceral reaction. And it makes me mad."

Wow. It's about time someone said it. I love Lynda Carter more than ever.
